In addition, the correct choice of herbs to plant can help to keep harmful pests away and invite pollinators to visit. The right herbs planted together with other herbs and planted with your veggies can also enhance the flavor of neighboring plants.

But which herbs should be planted with which other herbs or together with which vegetables?

Some tips on planting herbs

Many Mediterranean herbs grow well together because they prefer similar conditions. Basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage, and marjoram all thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, making them good companions.

Fennel should be planted separately, as it can inhibit the growth of nearby plants. Mint should also be isolated or grown in containers because it spreads aggressively. Dill and cilantro should be spaced apart to avoid cross-pollination.

Basil is the classic companion for tomatoes, helping deter pests and improve growth. Chives, oregano, parsley, and thyme also pair well with tomatoes in the garden.

Yes, as long as they have similar light and water needs. For example, rosemary, thyme, and oregano grow well together. Avoid mixing moisture-loving herbs with drought-tolerant ones in the same pot.

Many herbs contain strong essential oils that can deter insects. For example, rosemary and sage may help repel cabbage moths, while mint can discourage aphids and flea beetles.

When planting your garden, don’t forget the herbs. The benefits from having the right herbs paired with the right vegetables sprinkled around your garden will last long beyond this growing season.

Planting season is finally here, or almost. It’s time to get our hands dirty!
